I was just wondering if anyone knows any information regarding how Warner Bros. and Rhino work when it comes to releasing DVD-A titles.

I had thought that the Rhino subsidiary was handling catalog titles while WB handled "newer" titles, but that's definitely not true. Magnification was released through Rhino but Rumours was not. Perhaps WB only lets Rhino handle "smaller" titles on a case-by-case basis?

I was also thinking that perhaps the lack of information regarding the disappearance of some previously announced titles might be due to one side 'leaving it up' to the other side. DVD-Audio has completely disappeared from the Rhino site, so if Rhino was responsible for promoting a disc like What's New, it would explain why we haven't heard anything about it (do you get the feeling that I was really looking forwad to that disc?)

Any thoughts on this?

The whole Rhino-WB connwction is odd. It seems to me that WB decided to make Rhino its "legacy" division, much like SONY has their own.

I wonder what the story is behind that. Does WB think the boomer market is getting so small that they don't care about their former "big ticket" artists?

I wonder why they don't refer to DVD-A anymore on their (Rhino) web site. They are losing a lot of momentum to SACD.

Where's Neil Young when they need him? :)

An article in the Brittish Hifi & record review mag stated that the DVD Audio promotion and handling has gone over to WarnerVision. Also they mention that at 27 Aug a relaunch in Europe will take place.

Yeah, I noticed at the Amazon.uk site that all of the existing Warner/Rhino DVD-A titles are marked "not yet released." I suppose that's in anticipation of this European "re-launch."

Aug 27th has been mentioned as the European Warner relaunch on a number of websites and in several magazines. I've received a number of emails from inside sources listing the same date as well, but nothing official as to pertains to the US. (Although I'm now starting to get actual release dates for a number of their announced titles trickling in).

As for the Rhino-Warner connection, there doesn't seem to be anything set in concrete as to who's handling which releases, at least in the background news I'm receiving currently. One interesting note to all this is that the Rhino website, which always has their upcoming release schedule posted week by week has skipped Aug 27th entirely. Now my first thought would be that they have nothing available for release on that date, but I've been following their site for almost a year now, and they've consistently had titles coming out every week in one format or another. I find it very curious that the 27th has nothing listed, at least not yet that is.

I may be Wrong on this so don't hold me to it , but I thought I had read somewhere that Rhino was doing SACD!?
I could be Wrong though!

Can't say I've heard about any Rhino SACDs so far.

But Warner Music has issued some Stereo SACDs in Hong Kong of local artists. You can buy them via YesAsia.Com.

Like I said , I'm not sure of it mabe .. an MFSL or one of the old L.P. specialty labels. Maybe Telarc was what I was thinking of ... I don't know .... ah! Maybe it's just a senior moment , thou I'm not one yet!!! 46? or 47? Ah! 1955 from 2002 is a..........<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT="">

Frank,

i'm glad to know that a relaunch is planned for august 27 in europe.
I'm just wondering *when* it has been launched here... finding out something, even titles that are supposed to be on catalog, is simply impossible.
I'm currently buying dvd-a titles on the web from the US, better selection (easy when there are just 4-5 titles or sometimes none at all) and half the price (including shipping).

Wel me too, There are just a handfull shops in Holland selling DVD Audio's. A year ago I found *some* titles at the 'MediaMarkt' and a local shop is selling imported DVD Audio's. The situation in Germany is a bit better. The first superstore I went into had the complete Warner catalog. (For Europe that is )

The situation for sacd is not better...
Found four shops carrying some titles in promotional display stands. But last time I went there it was all gone.

I have a leaflet from Warner (march '02) listing a number of titles with catalog numbers not even on mike's upcoming list. Never found them though.

Crosby, Stills & Nash, First Album #0-8122783369-5
Little Feat, Waiting for Columbus #0-8122783409-8
Graham Nash, Songs for beginners #0-8122783389-3
Jean-Luc Ponty, Cosmic Messenger #0-8122783429-6
Todd Rundgren, Something/Anything #0-8122783399-2
Warren Zevon, Excitable Boy #0-9122783379-4

The rest of this list is released already but not all of them in Europe.

Got the list accompanied by a sampler containing some tracks from the early releases and an interview with Neill Young.

I think we must take 'strategic' as in 'long term'.

The one shop selling the imports is selling them for 35 euro ( ~33..35 USD ) so ordering over the internet is actually a lot cheaper.

Interesting insert. I received an email about 2-3 months ago from a friend in the business that included a number of possible upcoming Warner titles including the Little Feat, Todd Rundgren and the Warren Zevon titles that your insert shows. Nothing since on any of them unfortunately. As they have catalog numbers, hopefully these are indeed coming. I'd love to have the Graham Nash title, as I've always considered it as his best solo release.

I just received the Graham Nash disc from Amazon. So it is available. It is from DTS Entertainment.

Emil, You're confusing titles. I wasn't talking about the recent Graham Nash: Songs For Survivors release from DTS. I was talking about the Graham Nash: Songs For Beginners title listed on Frank's post. It was released on the Atlantic label back in '71. A great album that would be even better on DVD-A.

Wow, "Something/Anything" and "Waiting For Columbus"? I sure hope these make it to market. These are two of my all-time favorite albums.
