:brew good idea, everything seems better after a :beer2 or 5!

What CD-4 demod did you get? there might be a circuit diagram available, if there is I should be able to work out what may have happened, maybe more than one scenario though!

My suspicion is that the Left demod that mixes down the LF-LR (or LR-LF) (to the audio 20Hz-ish - 15kHz) isn't working for some reason, so nothing is being subtracted, so the Left decode matrix just outputs LF+LR to both Front & Rear. With old equipment the most common failure is with capacitors, especially electrolytics.

Hehe.. great minds! Just finished number 4.. beer that is.. "sorrow drowning" = helping

Its a JVC 4DD-5.. (looks and sounds good as new, one careful Quaddy owner and all that..) ..the Right channels are separating pretty well, very well as it happens.. but the Lefties, oh they're rebelling worse than Shirley Williams, Roy Jenkins and David Steel..! :p

Oh Duncan, I do hope you can solve it, please.. I've done nothing to the cables or the demodulator since the last time I tried it (when the Left channels worked perfectly! D'oh!).. Thank you so much (in advance!) :upthumb

After a lot of searching I've found a circuit diagram for the JVC 4DD-5 CD-4 demodulator. For other owners its at http://www.sm5cbw.se/audio/jvc/4dd-5.htm click on the pdf of the circuit to download.

Where I suspect things have gone awry

WOW!! :yikes

Duncan!!! That is absolutely amazing!! :worthy

Thank you so much!! :)

So.. to paraphrase The O'Jays; "Now That You Found Out.. What Are We Gonna Do Bout It?"

That is the real issue! It really needs a CD4 set-up to debug and fault find on the kit, or a signal source (it could be done with an Arbitrary Waveform Generator to produce the LF+LR & modulated LF-LR). I think you need to find a specialist repair shop, there must be one in the big smoke. I found one to service and repair my reel-to-reels, but sadly it weren't cheap. The other way is buy some more 4DD-5s and mix and match innards until it works.

I hear you loud and clear! The fun starts now trying to fix the blinking thing! :upthumb
Tbh, the prospect of finding another 4DD-5 seems like no mean feat, this one set me back £155 (to be fair that included postage from Italy but it's a European model so no voltage complications etc., even though that's no big deal it's just one less little black transformer plug to accommodate round the back of my equipment unit, it's a bit full of spaghetti cables and plugs as it is, as you can imagine!

£155 + probable repair so ouch! But it is a problem with old kit, they eventually fail, especially if they haven't been used in a while. I have a Sony portable DAT that I hardly ever used (and had it from new) and it failed when I switched it on a couple of months ago to do some transfers off a misbehaving tape from my other DAT in the hi-fi rack. I think I've found a place Plymouth way which can fix it, but no where else.

Don't buy a non-working 4DD-5 if the vendor says the power supply has failed, so no power light. If its blown its probably destroyed all the electronics.

Adam did you get any type of warranty when you purchased the demodulator from Italy? Not to sound negative, but way back in the day the failure rate among these CD~4 demodulators was high. And another important consideration......When you start putting components between your player (or Turntable) to your receiver, unlike digital, analogue does suffer degradation so I would upgrade my RCA interconnects (do NOT use the cheapies that come with the units) and this goes for the RCA outputs from your TT to the Surround Master and from the Surround Master to your receiver. You will experience an immediate upgrade in sound if you choose those RCA interconnects WISELY. Is there a local audio dealer that can lend you RCA interconnects for audition so you can experience firsthand the difference in SQ among the various interconnects?

Buddy, I AM rooting for your success but little Davy has met his Goliath. It's a bitch of a system to conquer.....and conquer is an apt word. Only wish the Surround Master guru would hurry up with his CD~4 demodulator but I don't envy the task he has ahead of him.

(Fully aware that this thread is not for a whole spiel about my trials and tribulations with CD-4.. sorry.. I'll just respond to Ralph's latest post now and then I guess we can get back to the scheduled programming! :D )

No guarantee Ralph, it was sold as seen and the seller in all fairness clearly outlined in the description no implied warranty.. a risk I was willing to take for a unit with the right voltage etc. and that wasn't going to clobber me for import duty, among other things.. hand on heart it was the cheapest option that ticked a couple of other boxes.

Just as an example of the alternatives available at the time, I looked at buying one of those new old stock ones on eBay (seller based in Canada) but it would have ended up costing me approx £250 (as of today that's in excess of $300 US in total, with shipping and customs charges.!!) absolutely not gonna go there for that kind of dough, much as I love this hobby of ours! :D

Regarding Cabling, to be honest I'm just using whatever phono cables I have to hand (nothing bar the turntable which has them hardwired to the tonearm, has come with any so I've been scrabbling around a bit.. Dave kindly threw in a bunch of quality interconnects, speaker cable and other goodies when I got some gear off him and I've been using some of that, it all sounds great so far, that's not the problem, well I don't think it is.. its that the other day the JVC unit perfectly demodulated the 2 channels into readily distinguishable (if not totally discrete) FL, FR, SL, SR and now all I get is both Left channels in both FL and SL, while FR & SR are almost but not quite spot on with a nice feeling of separation even if there is some bleed evident if you go right up to either FR or SR.. anyway I'm barely past day 1 in this whole CD-4 fiasco, so I may just be missing something really obvious.. who knows!? I don't!

Thanks Ralph, that's kind of you rooting for me.. I've got no preconceptions.. well that's not true, I kinda feared this might be a nightmare.. so far its like the beginning of what could turn out to be a bad dream, if I let it get under my skin and mess with the inner workings of my miiiiindddd...! Haha.. I don't care really, its all a bit of fun.. it just would be nice to be able to say (not that its likely I'd be able to find anyone outside of QQ who might listen!) "You know that CD-4 Quadraphonic vinyl thing from the 70's? Oh you do! How wonderful! Well, I've got one and it actually works! How about that eh?" Oh.. there goes some tumbleweed to accompany those bells in the CD-4 setup disc that went round the room the right way for about five minutes..! Haha.. :D

Amen to that, my 4-earred friend! That Involve CD-4 demodupotatopeeler cannot come soon enough..

Hi. fredy

My condolence in your bereaved CD-4 unit I think what " DuncanS " on page #403 has said could be your problem, it`s not that you are recapping a Quad Receiver which will cost a leg & arm & lug, your unit only has one small circuit board there must be some tecky around just have to investigate.
But do try things again ?????..... remember I said I had 3 working CD4 units 2 years ago & only 1 is working today.

Oh dear.. now I go back to try and use the bloody CD-4 thing and its stopped separating the Front Left and Rear Left all of a sudden..! :yikes

Front Right and Rear Right separate ok, not 100% there is still some very very faint crosstalk.. but for reasons completely unknown now just getting everything out all at once of both Left speakers. BOO..!! :(

If it seems too good to be true, it usually is. HA! Right, I'm off for a drink, sod it! :D
