One of my favorite ways to unwind, surround wise, is with an 80s Hits playlist I’ve curated (50+ songs, and always looking for more).

So, while I have the 80s on my mind, and in case anyone wants to jump in with their faves, here are my ten favorite 80s hits in surround — I’m taking into account both the quality of the song and the quality of the mix. I’m also keeping the list to actual hits which, since I’m in the U.S., I’m defining as stuff that made the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In chronological order:

Queen - Another One Bites The Dust (#1, 1980)
Blondie - Call Me (#1, 1980) - Tidal Atmos downmix to 5.1
Steely Dan - Hey Nineteen (#10, 1980)
Fleetwood Mac- Gypsy (#12, 1982)
Toto - Africa (#1, 1983)
Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing (#3, 1983)
Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World (#1, 1984)
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer (#1, 1986)
Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine - Rhythm Is Gonna Get You (#5, 1987)
Guns N’ Roses - Welcome To The Jungle (#7, 1988)

I just put the following list together, based on my own collection. In alphabetical order. I am not sure if all of these were US hits.

Depeche Mode - Master and Servant
Genesis - Tonight, Tonight, Tonight
INXS - Need You Tonight
Marillion - Kayleigh
Pixies - Monkey Gone to Heaven
Roxy Music - Avalon
Simple Minds - Alive and Kicking
Talking Heads - Burning Down the House
Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels
Ultravox - Vienna

I would add:

Alan Parsons Project - "Sirius/Eye In The Sky"
Bon Jovi - "Wanted Dead Or Alive"
Bryan Ferry - "Slave To Love"
Bryan Adams - "Run To You"
Crowded House - "Don't Dream It's Over"
Donald Fagen - "New Frontier"
Dire Straits - "Walk Of Life"
Foreigner - "Urgent"
James Taylor - "Her Town Too"
Tears For Fears - "Sowing The Seeds Of Love"
