Atlantic LP labels: why two layouts?

That's a thing that crossed my mind many times but never asked:

Anyone knows the reasons why sometimes the second label style is used instead of the first one - not minding the specific colours? It's not related to a specific musical genre or a era. I know the second is a legacy from 78 rpm.

The original stereo release of The J. Geils Band's 1974 LP Nightmares ....And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle used that same Atlantic label design (and yes, it's a legacy from the design that Atlantic used on their early releases in the 1950's). Possibly The J. Geils Band requested that they use that vintage Atlantic label on their album.
