Hey guys and gals!

So, I'm here to ask some advice and, quite frankly, there is no better place to ask than this esteemed gathering of like minded folk. Before I start, I'd just like to say that I've read the stickies, have a basic understanding of quad and am looking for some up to date wisdom just to make sure I'm headed in the right direction. I've been a long time fan of multi-channel audio, pretty much since the early 70's when my father came home with a Dynatron Music Centre that had quadraphonic capabilities...

Now, I was only about 5 or 6 at the time, so didn't really understand it all, but the fact it had four speakers intrigued me no end and whilst I don't recall any specific quad titles being played on here, I remember the all-encompassing sound and that was it. I was set for life. For me, there is no other way of listening to music.

So, some 40 odd years on, here I am, with three 5.1 set up's in my home, two more sitting in the loft and I now have an ever increasing desire to acquire some original quad hardware and material simply because I'm just a fan. I also recently rekindled my love affair with vinyl, having stored it all away some time ago. So, my turntable, cheap and simple as it is, is reclaiming it's place at the heart of my main set up along side new fangled whizz bangs such as the Blu Ray player ;)

What I'm really looking for is some guidance on getting started. I want to start simple, so I'm thinking of a SQ capable receiver to begin with. I just saw a Harman/Kardon 75+ sell for just £50 on eBay so think that was quite reasonable? I'd like to avoid buying another set of speakers (we all know how much wives hate cables) so was wondering about a solution that would allow me to switch between my modern receiver and the quad one whilst using the same speakers. Is that worth doing? I remember rigging something similar up at my Dad's restaurant so that he could divert the Hi-Fi in the lounge upstairs to the speakers downstairs in the dining room. Seemed to work but I would never claim it was of audiophile quality! LOL ;)

I understand that if I got such an SQ Receiver that my current turntable would suffice for now? It's CD-4 material that requires something more specific, yes?

Maybe much later down the line I can start exploring CD-4 and other modulation systems but for now I'd like to start simple and, more importantly, affordable. Which brings me to my next point.

Is eBay the best place to buy hardware? I'm in the UK and see a few examples of hardware knocking around on there. Are there any specialists dealers in the UK that sell this stuff outside of eBay? Any links or names would be gratefully received.

So, that's it really. Looking to start, need some guidance. All advice gratefully received and thank you in advance :)

If you have analog inputs on your modern receiver all you need is a decoder to play the quad formats (e.g. SQ and QS).

The Surround Master SQ edition is a great option...for SQ abd QS (and EV-4 ) - as good as the best vintage decoders..they say...

I've hooked up my (modern) turntable to a stereo amp (with phono stage)
then the tape out feeds into the surround master
The surround master feeds into the analog ins on my modern receiver

Voila! Quad and modern surround in the same set-up...

Oh, now THAT sounds like a good solution! Is this the one?

Is it only available direct from Involve? I see John from this parish has given it a good write up, so if you and him say it's good, that'll do for me! :)
