Int the article noted above, surround engineer, Frank Filipetti, references a technical "manifesto" written by a committee of engineers including Filipetti, Elliot Scheiner, Bob Clearmountain, et al, entitled "Recommendations for Surround Production." The paper was published in 2004 and can be viewed here;

A decade or so ago there was a magazine called "Surround Professional" backed, I believe, by Tomlinson Holman.

Great info but probably impossible to find today.
