Took a run to the San Diego Frys in search of the new Bowies (no luck), but did run into something quite interesting. The SACD / DVD-Audio section had been moved to the far corner of the CDs (ugh), and in its place was a non-enclosed “living room” with a simple surround set-up. The set-up was sponsored by MonsterMusic and featured their version of ‘Genius Loves Company’ over the sound system. Physically, it was nothing more than a couch on a carpet surrounded by a Polk-Audio sub-sat system connected to a Denon receiver, a low-price Denon dvd-player and a TV. Nuthin’ fancy. Not trying to push new hardware requirements on anybody; just showing the “average joe” listener how their average home theater can sound when playing the new MonsterMusic releases. And it was working! People were sitting down and digging it. Small groups of 1-2 people were continually milling about the couch and the rack of MonsterMusic Titles during the half hour or so I was perusing the music section - - and during that period three copies of Ray Charles and one of Three Doors Down disappeared from the racks. Could it be evidence that with a decent marketing effort there might be a mainstream future for surround music?
