Hi All,

This is my first post here, but I'm glad I stumbled upon this forum. I have a Japanese released LP from Teichiku: FX-408 Rock Fantasia. It seems to be a 4 channel record as it is labeled with a big 4 near the top on the back cover and on the front near the top center it say "4 Channel Teichiku Records", "4s System Matrix", and "Super Space Stereo Sound". I assume that it is some sort of QS/RM encoding but I can't find anything about this recording or this type of matrix sound. Does anybody know anything more about this?

I've recently undertaken the task of converting all my old LP's to digital format, but the quadraphonic recordings are the most difficult since I have to try to decode them first. I wish there were some way to do all the decoding in the digital domain.

I have a Pioneer QX-949 which I can use for the decoding even though it's not the most ideal solution.

How about posting a scan of the cover.

When you're going to digitize your Quad LP's the question is for what purpose. If the goal is not to make 5.1 mixes of them but just to preserve them on red book CD, you won't need to decode the quad. Unless you undertake the digital conversion too much post processing the QS or SQ encoding will stay intact and you can decode the CD's on your quad receiver as if you where listening to the LP's. This just doesn't work for CD-4.
I even once decoded MP3 tracks of quad recordings back to wave and burned them on CD, and to my surprise they still were quad.

There are several commercial CD's out there which are reissues of matrix encoded LP's and had been digitized from the original quad encoded master tapes. Black Jazz CD's are one example.

You can decode SQ and QS recordings in Adobe Audition very simply. From the 4 mono files you can create Dolby Digital, DTS or DVD-A discs with the proper software.

Check out the "Surround Sound Tech Talk" section of the forum for some good info on the process.

Thanks for the reply. Here some photos of the Album in question. http://picasaweb.google.com/mutterminder/RockFantasia# Surely somebody on this forum has, or has seen this type of record before.

It's cool that Adobe Audition can decode the matrixed audio, but it's a bit pricey for me. How well does it work compared to the best hardware decoders? I don't see why CD-4 couldn't also be decoded digitally. If you use at least a 96Khz sample frequency, this should be enough retain the 30Khz carrier frequency. With band pass filtering it's going to cut out the high end frequencies, but there should be enough for a decoder to work with. If you had to, you could use 192Khz sample frequency. Most modern radio receivers demodulate signals in the digital domain. These same techniques could certainly be applied to CD-4 demodulation. With out a dedicated DSP, you might not be able to do it in real time, but if you are converting to a different form, this is not really necessary.

Some of the Teichiku FX series titles also mention RM or QS next to the "4s System Matrix", and "Super Space Stereo Sound" that has led me to believe that the matrix is either compatible with QS (like Nippon-Columbia's QX system) or is simply RM with a fancy name.
Titles I know of that list RM
