I attended a show called "The Royal Affair" on Tuesday. It had a lineup that included Carl Palmer and band doing an "ELP Legacy" show. Aurthur Brown on vocals. It then transitioned to John Lodge doing a handful of Moodies tunes. It then transitioned to the current incarnation of Asia, and finally to the current incarnation of Yes. Steve Howe played with both of the latter two bands.

While I cant recommend the ELP or the John Lodge portions of the show, things got considerably better when Asia got on. The Yes show was a pleasant surprise indeed. The singer sounds remarkably like Jon Anderson and he played the part well. Alan White was on drums. Steve Howe was spectacular as usual.

How was Art G. GOS? He is performing locally here also. Otherwise, it will be Bryan Ferry on August 11 in Philly.

First off. He's old. I mean, he acts old. He is super educated, you can tell. He's funny, witty. That's all part of his charm.
I mean, seeing him was like a dream come true for me. He talks a good amount....reads a lot of his poetry between the songs. I just can't tell you how many times I felt a tear or 2 just watching him hobble across the stage.

Well I've been busy grooving and letting my hair down ( I wish!! ) lately.

In May I saw Tower of Power supported by Incognito at the Royal Albert Hall ..brilliant show. Took my fellow, surround loving, younger bro as he is a massive T O P fan.

Then spent 3, slightly muddy days, at the IOW Music Festival in early June. Totally brilliant time..With Music loving bro, daughter, daughter in law and bro's new partner.

Finally, watched the Beach Boys, again at the Royal Albert Hall on 24th June. Another brilliant show..( a theme going on there ). Went with a certain Mr Smithers of Quad fame...great to socialise with a fellow Quaddie member.

And then on July 1st going back to the Royal Albert Hall to see The Average White Band..with bro again..

If I can, I will post some videos I took at the various events.

Never to old to Rock n Roll!!

This work is just a silly pantomime but the cast really brought out the comic potential – largely thanks to a genuinely funny English translation. I thought it would be fun but I was blown away by the singing. Sabine Devieilhe was superb as Marie but bel canto Mexican tenor Javier Camarena as Tonio brought the house down. He’s only a small guy but he has a truly enormous voice. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the sort of wild ovations he got for the famous tricky tenor aria “Ah, mes amis” with its repeated high Cs. Of course he had to encore it. Here he is doing just that in the same Laurent Pelly production at the Met earlier this year:

An elegant production at Covent Garden last night, beautifully sung and with the ROH orchestra playing their hearts out...

Of course it contains some of Mozart’s most sublime writing for ensemble voices – how he could create such beauty from intertwined voices is mind boggling. How do you get two groups of singers one singing about being the angriest they have ever been the other the happiest ever, to combine into a glorious single wave of passion? His genius was well served by this interpretation.

We're pretty much at the end of the summer opera season in the UK now so that's it until the autumn / winter season starts in September when I've lots of performances booked with both the ROH and the ENO. The gap though will be well filled by The Proms which start next week (and I'm going to the first night!)

I saw the Rolling Stones back in '89 so I didn't feel the need to drop any cash on tix for their nearby show in New Orleans -- just as well, it has been moved to Monday (and maybe moved again to Tuesday, as this hurricane -- yes, it's now Hurricane Barry -- is so slow!).

I'm on the outskirts of its range, and so far it is just waiting, waiting, and more waiting for the predicted ten inches of rain. Oh well, as long as power doesn't go out, I can watch movies and listen to my newly-acquired Oppo :LB). Nobody ever mentions how BORING a hurricane can be when power is out :(.

Last night was the First Night!....

I battled through the summer rain to hear the Proms kicked off in grand style by the BBC S.O. with a shattering performance of Janacek’s monumental Glagolitic Mass. Great job by guest conductor Karina Canellakis (amazingly, in its 125th year, this is the first First Night to be conducted by a woman!) who commanded a blazing sound from the orchestra, massed choirs of the BBC Singers and BBC Chorus, soloists and the thunderous RAH organ.

It’s on the BBC iPlayer for a few weeks if you want to have your cobwebs blown away. I've checked to make sure you can't see me in the audience!!!.....

Red Rocks, my one and only gig there in spite of the rain...
Jason Bonham opening with a truncated setlist (have I mentioned the rain????) was awesome!!!!
On to good ole Peter Frampton...had seen him once, in San Juan in 1980(!!!!)...
His illness has got him looking extremely frail, but he still has the strength to play perfectly and his voice is exactly the same!!!...well, he can't hit the highy notes anymore but, hey!!!!
Played for more than 2 hours...how old is he???
Wonderful farewell gift for me since I am moving to New Orleans soon...
