Good to see this thread active again. I think choices a member makes about this very interesting. Except for those that have a colored circle with a "W" or whatever in the middle.

The one I find most eclectic & amusing belongs to @ubertrout . Check out Post #129. I mean this is crazy. Who is Sam and Max? What is Warsaw Pact Socialist Television? Now that we know the story behind ubertrout's avatar he can share the story behind the story.

My Avatar is a version of this image which I don't know exactly where it originates.

I used to share many of my surround-sound creations on a certain website and an admirer of my work started making "disk art" for my compilation albums. I had started using the alias of "Methuselah's Grandpa" for myself instead of my real name and I suppose this person found this wizard-looking grandpa character somewhere and started using it on his custom art-work for my mixes. I went with the flow & decided to just permanently adopt it and the name despite myself not actually being THAT old or even a grandpa for that matter! 🤣
That looks like a line art drawing from an old Dungeons & Dragons manual. Maybe Larry Elmore?

I started my career in the recording industry at Trident Studios as a tea-boy. My first day I took a tray of tea to the mix room for Queen, who were mixing 'Killer Queen'

Quite the start - although this image is from more almost 50 years later.... SWTx (but an original 70's Trident mug)
Hey that's really cool: Trident had mugs like that back in the 70's?

They should sell them again, I'd buy one!

And even more cool is your "behind your avatar" story. Amazing!

I originally had an image from "Pink Floyd at Pompeii" one of my fave music films.

I'm also a big fan of the Asterix books, written and illustrated by Goscinny & Uderzo. Asterix & Obelix famously hunt for wild boar, and there is usually a big feast at the end of every book. Plus a lot of eating & food throughout the tales. It's impossible to read those books without getting hungry! Lol

It's based in the Roman empire. Asterix & Obelix are Gauls, fighting the Romans who have been trying to conquer their little village. They have been to Pompeii.

A friend brought me those figurines back from France, where there's an Asterix theme park. And I had that Pompeii souvenir jug laying around.

So I guess it's a pun on Pink Floyd at Pompeii. The Asterix books are full of puns & humour.

Sure! I played a lot of the Lucasarts graphic adventure games as a youth in the early/mid 1990s. Sam and Max were created by Steve Purcell, whose day job was as an artist for Lucasarts. In 1994 or so he licensed the characters to his employer and they made the game Sam & Max Hit the Road. The line struck me as kind of hilarious and unlikely, and I've occasionally used it as a screen name. Amusingly I don't think I'm the only person to use it - it's not always available when I've tried.

In addition to that game there's been three more games made by Telltale, and there was a one-season run of a kids cartoon of Sam & Max as well, along with a run of comic books.

I've told my story before, and it's not so thrilling. My avatar is of course, a young Ozzy. Sabbath is my favorite band, seems I never find a fitting picture of the band that fits or shows nicely as an avatar, so I choose Ozzy. Also, I loved him as their lead man....and his initial solo career was staggeringly good in the early 80's.

User name? GOS
Again, I always thought Ozzy's solo effort Ozzmosis was a cool name, so I took first letter of my name G, slapped OS on the end and GOS was born. lol

Also, actually, if I remember.....my original user name was gosmosis, and I requested it to be shortened. Yes, I bastardized the spelling of Ozzmosis, but you know.

Jedi Knight, Dark Forces II was amazing for it's time: very immersive world. Sometimes I'd just wander around & explore

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II - Wikipedia

Maybe later than your references though?

I didn't recognize Ozzy: thought he was some folk singer like Nick Drake etc!
