SuperDeluxeEdition is reporting that two Phil Collins albums, Face Value and Both Sides will receive deluxe reissues later this year. No word yet as to the contents of the packages. I seem to remember Phil saying some time back that his catalog was being remixed for 5.1. Hopefully we'll get surround mixes in these reissues.

WHOA that's amazing news! 5.1 or not, I will get those.

Random choices, though. I wonder why they'd pick those two out of his catalogue... The more obvious choices would be to a) re-release the catalog chronologically or b) re-release the biggest hit albums, i.e. "...But Seriously".

EDIT: ahh, just saw the post. All albums are coming! Woot!

And the pertinent info from it:
Phil Collins‘ 1981 album Face Value will be reissued this autumn as a deluxe edition, heralding the start of a new global catalog deal with Warner Music Group.

The new partnership will encompass newly remastered deluxe editions of all eight Phil Collins studio albums as well as other “uniquely curated titles from the vaults”.

It remains to be seen how ambitious the reissues will be and if we will see multi-disc super deluxe edition box sets or cheaper, more compact two or three disc sets. Collins’ 1993 album Both Sides will be released alongside Face Value in 2015.
Obviously we don't know at this point if surround for these reissues is in the cards or not, but regardless, I'm glad to see this happen. I've been saying for years that Phil's solo catalogue has been largely neglected, especially in light of the Genesis reissues around the time of the reunion tour, so I'll look forward in anticipation to see what these actually contain! :)

E-mail sent to Warner:

Dear Warner team,

Today, I learned that Phil Collins' solo albums will be re-released as remastered editions, with "Jacket" and "Both Sides" coming later this year. I am more than excited to learn this is finally happening.

As you might know, engineer Allen Sides remixed least some of Phil Collins' albums into 5.1 surround sound over a decade ago, and those mixes were never released:

I am sure many fans would be delighted to hear these surround mixes. Is there any chance the 5.1 versions will be included in the upcoming re-releases? This fan says: please make it happen!

Best regards,

Feel free to send your own (don't copy-paste mine though).

Good idea man....I just emailed them as well.

Well it might be time to bring out this interesting fact into the light once again (especially if it isn't widely known on QQ)
A sample from the Phil Collins surround remixing project from many years ago did make it out into the public, but sadly it's not actually in surround. It's on the 'Love Songs' CD collection:

"One More Night" is a stereo fold down of a recent 5.1 remix, but it's pretty much identical to the original.

Besides bringing that fact to light, Phil also addressed the surround remixes that have already been completed and why they haven't been released. (This is from 2004):
ALBUM 5.1 REMIXES....3 albums have been already remixed, Face Value, NJR, and But Seriously. Allen Sides did them a couple of years back. I have put them on hold because to my mind the only reason to put these CD's out AGAIN, would be as part of a COMPLETE set of PC CD's. It seems though that the Record Company jury is out as to whether a box set that includes less "popular" CD's like Both Sides and DITL is worth it...my feeling is that any kind of box set is not complete unless it IS complete.

More of Phil's own internet postings from his old fan forum can be found here: http://genesisgts.conforums.com/index.cgi?board=pcsolo&action=display&num=1309780636

Nice work, Ryan. I did see that Allen Sides had a remix credit for the Love Songs CD, so that makes some sense.

In the Air Tonight, the first single off Face Value, was used in the pilot of the TV series The Americans, also available on blu-ray (DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1). It might be just me but what I hear there is a pretty good surround mix. It's out there, guys & gals!

That sounds ominous. :( Hopefully the surround mixes will be mastered in a way so as to preserve the dynamics.

The original CD is quite possible to listen to while rotating the volume knob a couple of extra turns. :)

My first CD player was a Phillips CD104B which I bought from Comet (a now long gone UK retailer) in Wolverhampton. It never worked properly but I still have it after 30 years ready for repair when I get around to it. It weighs a ton, is solid iron and sounded great. Any hoo I had to buy CD's to play on it and I bought Face Value and Mike Oldfield's Ommadawn. I recall there were maybe 30 CD titles available at the time.
I had a flat (apartment) back then with some serious speakers (Monitor Audio MA3 ??) which went real loud when in the air tonight was played. Fantastic memories which I hope to relive with an extra 3 speakers soon!.
As a further Collins memory, when playing inside out as a demo on the same set up it made many people jump as there was no noise!
