An acquaintance of mine, and fellow blogger, Paul Sinclair, has an interview with Olivier Robert-Murphy next week, talking about the whole High Fidelity Pure Audio project.

Keep an eye out...

Paul has been fairly vocal on the subject of Blu Ray Audio and recently (and rightfully) gushed about the XTC "Nonsuch" release. This will be a very interesting interview indeed!

Great news! Thanks for letting us know Rob :) I hope he pulls no punches.. and puts a good word in for all the early adopters and supporters here at QQ of Mr.Robert-Murphy's HFPA endeavour.. and that he puts forward the not insignificant case for the call for more 5.1 mixes on these releases in future?

Just out of curiosity, does Paul Sinclair know of QQ? If not, have you mentioned this forum/invited him to sign up? He would sure be a great person to have join and get involved here.

Paul doesn't pull punches, in my experience. He properly laid into Peter Gabriel when he released the £100 'So' box set that failed to feature 5.1 mixes, only offered a DVD of the '87 gig and had no b-sides or remixes included.

So much so that Peter responded to him personally...

Imagine Paul's ire when after the best part of a year after releasing this box set, Peter releases the aforementioned '87 gig on Blu Ray!!

And then when Peter decided to release box set exclusive content outside of the box set...

I'm almost certain Paul lurks both here and at sa-cd.net and probably other places too. For the benefit of his site, I think it's a pre-requisite. I'll drop him a note to ask, just in case ;)

Just heard from Paul,

He thinks he's asked the questions we all wanted to put across, so we'll have to wait and see. Paul is acutely aware of the discussions here and at other places on the interwebs and has aired his grievances to Mr Robert-Murphy about lack of 5.1 in the past. And he asks him again in this interview :)

Expect something towards the end of the week :)

Got my Beck Sea Change HFPA today. Not bad since I ordered it from the UK on November 13. Sounds great so far. It seems clearer than my DVD-A copy. It gives me hope if Universal does anymore OOP DVD-Audio or SACD re-releases on HFPA.

Exile On Main Street finally arrived in the post on Monday, alongside the Close To The Edge and Nonsuch Blu-rays - and I hadn't a free minute to listen to any of them.

I finally got round to giving Exile a spin last night, skimming through all of the tracks, and I've got to say that so far I'm not impressed. I know that giving each track a 30-60 second blast is not a quality listen, but I can't hear any improvement over the last two remastered CDs I bought. Where I was expecting a rich, organic sound, it is thin and bright and, while my ears had adjusted to it and started to enjoy things more in the second half, it's a double album, so that's a long time to wait.

Afterwards I did the same with Close To The Edge, and that's in another world of quality. Aside from being 5.1, the warmth, depth, separation and detail of the sound is incomparably superior to Exile.

I must obviously give Exile more detailed attention, but just wanted to say that, based on this first encounter, I would not file this under HFPA's success stories. It's less pointless than The Velvet Underground & Nico, but that's a low bar.

This looks interesting and hopefully will eventually be available in the U.S.

I just took a chance and ordered this from Amazon UK, since it shows 5.0 on the back cover photo of the case. I ordered from an affiliate seller, since Amazon UK proper didn't seem to have it in stock. Unfortunately, the third party seller didn't remove the VAT for the US like Amazon UK always does. Interestingly, I tried ordering it from Amazon.de before, since it was cheaper, but the seller wouldn't ship to the US. Coltrane is one of my favorites, so if it's not in surround I can live with it, but I'm really hoping it is a true surround mix.

John Coltrane 28.03.60 Düsseldorf HF Blu-ray Pure Audio

Very very fast. Only one day.

5.0 HD Master Audio 24 bit / 96 kHz
2.0 PCM 24bit / 96 kHz

I`ve seen it before, but it`s really terrible, only 36 minutes music.

Universal announced a new title today. Never Mind the Bullocks Here's the Sex Pistols. Universal did say it would be the 30 track special edition. Still...pass.
