From the 1971 concert in Montreux

Only footage of Gillan screaming AND bow your head? 8:50

Wow, great news! Already pre-ordered.

I guess it is just fine with me since I really enjoy vinyl and surround mixes (in digital formats). To be able to get the US Quad mix on Blu-ray is great, I think. I just hope the transfer/mastering was done with care. A new surround mix? I'll check it out, perhaps it turns out to be nicely done.

New stereo mix? Not sure if it is really needed, since the original mix is really good, but the previous remix (by Roger Glover) used some alternative parts, longer endings, etc., so this also might be interesting.

The "In Concert" disc is pretty much superfluous, has already been released several times.

The Montreux 1971 recording will perhaps be very interesting, if the quality is decent.

The vinyl LP with the new mix, not sure if this is really needed, but it looks nice, and at least it is a version I don't have yet on vinyl.

So, is this the live concert where someone shot the "flare gun" and caused the fire?

Well, I guess not, since it was Frank Zappa that played the show, but perhaps the same festival/time?

I'm surprised no one has commented about the Atmos mix of "Smoke On The Water" that's currently streaming on Apple Music (linked by @J. PUPSTER in another thread)

It's interesting and definitely different than prior surround versions - the height speakers seem to be used primarily to lift the drum kit. There's also this new pulsating keyboard(?) part during the intro build-up.
Unfortunately not available in Norway.

The Montreux Casino fire (and Zappa show) memorialized in 'Smoke on the Water' took place on December 4, 1971 . DP played Montreux in April 1971 (that's the video; it's not part of the Jazz festival, which was in June). They were back in Montreux in Dec 1971 to 'make a record with a mobile', i.e. to record Machine Head.

That's the Zappa show I was talking about above. Forget the exact date. 1971 for sure. I digressed a bit as I tend to do. There is absolutely no mention of a Zappa concert included with this Deep Purple set!

Hmmm... Dweezil is involved and making a new remix. I mean, maybe they are cooking up a release of that Zappa show behind the scenes as well? How cool would that be!

And not in the UK either 😕
VPN?

I ordered from jpc.de, if I end up paying VAT + extortion gathering fee, it'll still be less than amazon.co.uk! If I don't it will be about the same as amazon.fr.

amazon.fr has now adopted the same strategy as amazon.co.uk, i.e. give us your first name not just an initials or we won't let you buy it, then it wouldn't match my card, which is what we were told to do ages back. No reason given, its just amazon that does it. So :poop: to them!

2012 mix? Those three 5.1 tracks are from the 2001 DVD-A mix.
Key points:
- Deluxe box featuring a 2024 remix of the full album by Dweezil Zappa alongside a 2024 remaster on vinyl and CD
- additional Live content such as a previously unreleased concert from Montreux 1971 and the live album “In Concert ‘72”
- Blu Ray Audio will hold rare 1974 U.S. Quad mixes and three tracks in 5.1 audio from 2012, but also a brand new Atmos mix of the full album
- a book of approximately 60 pages, comprised of brand new liner notes, rare photographs and images

I was just going by what it says in the description. I assumed all the tracks would have been mixed in 5.1 in 2012 or 2001.

So is that a misprint/error?

Definitely an interesting Atmos remix. I’m not sure how I feel about it overall. Good clarity on the individual instruments and vocals. I would prefer more bass, it seems thin here. Guitar solo overhead. A lot of vocal ad libs I’ve not heard before on the fade out, primarily in the heights. And it doesn’t actually fade out, it just stops and a bit of studio chatter at the end. Very phasey sounding at the end. But the most perplexing thing is the weird phasey I think synth bits throughout. I felt like someone was playing Asteroids in the background.

I have the 40th Box Set from 2012 - so that was when they mixed into 5.1, the Quad mix is the UK SQ version

It is ignorant of the history of those tracks.

The 2012 box set credits those tracks thus:

  • Mixed By [Bonus 5.1 Mixes] – Paul Klingberg (tracks: DVD-16 to DVD-18)

i.e., they are the 2001 5.1 mixes, done by Paul Klingberg for DVD-A. (Later also released on SACD)
Yep, no dates given anywhere for the 5.1 on the 40th just implies 2012

The Klingberg credit I posted was from the 2012 40th.

And all of its credits are replicated on Discogs. The 5.1 tracks are tracks DVD-16 to DVD-18. They were not new mixes done for 2012.
