It's a really bad ass album. Love the way he does Dylan's Thin Man. But I would not say the Atmos is that "spatial".

I do think a new engineer is in order. The music deserves better. Not every pro engineer is great, I find most mediocre.

Well that's sort of how blues /blues influenced songs from the South go anyway, so....being from the South I can't say as it bothers me. Can't say as it's any worse than I hear in conversations.
