I was looking at that - pretty interesting package, too. Unlike all the others, the Lp jacket art is not reproduced on that tape box. I wonder why?

Isn't there a Moody Blues Reel that looks similar? Just basically a typed, black-on-white front cover? It even looks similar to Walter Murphy's A fifth of Beethoven Q8 which is again, just a white slicker with black, typed font. No album art. IIRC, the conversation came to the conclusion that these were considered "11th Hour" Q8 and Q4 reels, that the idea was simply to get the product out before the powers that be changed their minds.

Cut the cost to produce the graphics by about $300. Probably cut the sales even more though.

The Blue Jays cover was similar. This and Dragon Fly I think were some of the last quad tapes to be released by Stereotape.
They probably didn't have much time as the Quad clock was running out fast.

That makes some sense. Why put effort into a product that you knew was on its last legs? But geez... talk about not doing your best for a client :p

Still got a copy of Fillmore East to go...

No these were reissues by The Reel Society, who did a better job on the titles they reproduced. Only a few quads. The Walter Murphy was an RCA title which had nothing to do with these. I think Reel Society was mail order, it was not easy to find reels anyway by the mid 70s. Most joints were record shops, with an 8 track section. Maybe a few reels, lot of times reels were easier found at high end stereo retailers.

Interesting info, Tad! I've never heard of The Reel Society. How did their tapes compare to the factory issues? Sonically, I mean.
Reel Society tapes could be considered factory issues since most were made by Magtec. Later after Magtec quit doing business with them I think they started using Teac 3340s or something, but I don't think I bought any of those tapes.

They did the same thing with stereo tapes.

Does the Q4 tape of "Allman Brothers - Fillmore East" have that odd edit/break in one song on that the DTS-CD version has on disc 1? I can't recall the song but you hear guitar and then it jumps like tape was just cut out and spliced back together. I've always wondered if it was a DTS-CD conversion mistake or on the quad master.
