The video clip of George Martin can be found on the DVD on the UK CD/DVD set for the 40th anniversary, but was an extract from a programme in its own right: "Rhythm of Life", from 1997. He was just playing with the track, it was not part of any remix sessions.

According to this info from the Universal Music store uDiscover it looks like the 5.1 mix is not a 'new' mix but is the existing mix from the DVDA. Only the high-res stereo instrumental mix appears to be 'new'. We'll see if that's accurate or not. :)

That's what I thought....the "old" 5.1 mix from the DVD-A...just some more "fluff" to go with it...I certainly don't want it...I'm sure when Gos sees this he won't want it either:(

The sad part about this is(besides the old 5.1 mix)when sales are NOT impressive the record company will blame it on the lack of interest in surround music....once the word gets out that this is the old(and maligned)5.1 mix the surround community isn't going to heavily support it....the 2 channel lovers will look at this as too expensive...I will probably never get a good version of Pet Sounds...oh well...life goes on..

Time to give my ol' DVD-A a fresh listen. I think I've only ever heard the DVD-V layer. I can't say I was super-impressed with that layer, but I also had lowish expectations, given the age of the recording.
Are we being a little hard on the Beave maybe?

My impression of the DVD-A was that some songs sounded better than others but overall it was pretty artificial. It's depressing that a new mix wasn't attempted.

As much as I love surround...I'd love to have a GOOD hi rez mono version of this album...because that is the way it was recorded...in mono...someone that is in a position to actually know about the problems with the surround mix has given some reasons..on here..just scroll down to post 8 HERE....and when you look at the poll results you have to consider that people loved the content so much and were excited just to get a surround release...check out the review of that disc from "back in the day" here

My favourite stereo version so far is the Analogue Productions SACD.

I've got about 75% of the album in duophonic from tape sources on the Japanese 7 CD set from way back when. I'm one of the not quite as few as you might have expected that were disappointed when EMI Toshiba didn't proceed with releasing the duophonic CD.

I have absolutely no problems with the DVD-Audio - I love the 5.1 mix (but note that I cannot abide Wouldn't It Be Nice the song in any guise) - I don't think it's in the least unbalanced, and it certainly sounds tonally okay on my system. I think that God Only Knows is demonstration material.

I got the 24-192 downloads of many of the BB albums, but I didn't bother with Pet Sounds.

So, out of curiosity as much as anything, I will get this set.

Pre order now on US Amazon, 5 discs, forget it. $80.00, I can get 10 RBCD's of 80's hair bands and be way happier. HDTracks continues to up there catalog with more metal, I am double dipping but 24bit Skid Row, cmon how can I resist?

Are the existing mono CD releases (including Hoffman's) unacceptable? "Hi rez" doesn't create or add magic. The Brian Wilson mix will never be 'audiophile' quality.

As for stereo or surround, I 'get' not liking these....if you came to know and deeply love an album through a certain mix, any deviation can be a negative (see: me & Steve Wilson Yes/Tull/ELP/Crimson remixes). I was never huge on Pet Sounds so I enjoyed the 5.1 remix well enough, but I can certainly understand someone objecting to liberties taken compared to the original mono.

The DVD-A mix was 4.1. The center channel wasn't used. If the new BD-R version is being advertised as 5.1, and in fact is the same mix as the DVD-A, they're misrepresenting it.

The older DVD-A actually had a 5.1 MLP track on it and was included in the advertising..BUT..you are right...for the most part it wasn't used( except for a few seconds on bonus track 14))which was a decision made by Mark Linnett...but it could have still sounded better if mistakes weren't made after the mix was sent to be manufactured as Neil Wilkes pointed out in 2004...I'd just like a GOOD mono version and I'd be happy as the original recording was in mono...this title certainly has the most diverse opinions on the sound quality on any album that I can remember since I've been in the hi rez hobby...each version from vinyl to CD to hi rez have their fans and detractors...take a few minutes and read the comments on it HERE...and of course HERE...bottom line on all these versions seems to be...do you leave the original "warts" on the newer version or remove them and risk over processing it during the "clean up"...nobody seems to be able to find the right balance from this old mono source...

All in all, there doesn't seem to be a definiteive version of Pet Sounds which is why I, personally, stand behind the original EMI DVD~A. It has a stereo, mono and a perfectly serviceable '4.1' version and I recently purchased a second (back~up) copy for under $20. On MY system, the DVD~A sounds fantastic and nitpicking aside I refuse to invest in the upcoming Pet Sounds box set for the BD~A which I consider extraneous.

Yes, it was originally mixed in MONO and what they did to expand the soundstage via the DVD~A is pretty miraculous in MY book.

Enuf with Pet Sounds ..... let's concentrate on what should and is NOT being released in multichannel ....... Since Sgt. Pepper was so heavily influenced by Pet Sounds, why not give us THAT in 4.0? Now that would be something to crow about!
