So far I find most Naxos MC discs a little dull in terms of the mix. Am I missing the good ones.

No. They all have traditional music-up-front and ambience-in-back mixes. Some are quite good. ;-)

Tacet and ARTS have quite a few excellent string chamber music pieces, i.e. Schubert's Quintet is wonderful. Of course they are on DVD-A, although I see Tacet is putting some releases out in SACD now. The Schubert Octet, recently released with Camarada Frieden is also superb.

Yes, they are available. And Tower Records now has both sets of 10 SACDs on sale for $8.99 each for the next month.
