The rumors are true.

Oppo has released a beta test firmware update for their BDP-103 and BDP-105 Blu-Ray players that now will play back Stereo and Multichannel DSD (Direct Stream Digital) files !

Big news for surround fans that were looking for a more affordable entry to this world than the past options of buying DSD DACs (Digital to Audio Converters) that largely started at $2,000 - $15,000 for 2 Channel Stereo DSD playback.

Stereophile's Surround Guy Kal Rubinson has the scoop on the Stereophile web site at http://www.stereophile.com/content/news-flash-oppo-now-plays-dsd-files

Owners of the Oppo BDP-103 and BDP-105 can download the beta firmware files now at these links:

Enjoy !

Great news....

Looks like there are other good features in there in particular:

Added support for CUE file playback. The function can be applied to music files on local storage and supported audio formats include FLAC, WAV, APE and MP3.

However - this one may put a few people off:

The new decoder firmware supplied by our chip vendor tightens the validation check for AVCHD file format. If the files in the BDMV folder do not fully comply with the AVCHD specification, the folder will not play. (For example, if the files are from a disc backup instead of an original AVCHD recording, the player will reject it.)

Kal is a member here also! The Oppo's are some mean machines.

Yes, Kal is a great guy. I remember seeing him each year at CES when I was writing for High Fidelity Review.

Thank you one and all. Here's the latest. Last night, I discovered that the Oppo will also handle stereo/mch DSD files via SMB over ethernet.

Great. Can Oppo handle DST encoded DSD files, too? As you know, mch DSD audio is DST compressed on SACD discs.

DFF is the Philips DSD file format while DSF is that of Sony used for DSD discs. Both file formats are compatible with stereo and multichannel DSD audio. Afaik DFF can be DST compressed while DSF not.

Eureka! I just ordered the 103! Now I have the 93 for my dvd-audio iso's and 103 for my large sacd collection! I wish I had a one player does all solution, but this is still great news! I have a feeling that this option may not last just like the iso capability that was removed later in the 93/95.

Can someone put this in English? The only thing I understood was Oppo.
DSD is the digital audio coding used for SACD discs. Oppo BDP-103/105 players wth the latest (still beta) firmware now play DSD audio files from external storage devices like USB hard drives.

Does Audyssey basically kill DSD by turning it into PCM? If so, I guess one has to decide if the room calibration benefits override the loss of DSD. Actually, since quite a few SACDs are PCM-based, the conversion might not affect that many discs.

I have a BDP-95, not the new models. But I find that SACDs sound better with DSD output vs. the PCM output on that Oppo player. You could experiment with Audyssey on/off and Oppo playback via PCM and DSD to see what sounds the best.

Part of the fun of home audio ! :)

I have: I prefer the sound with Audyssey on.

For us non-insiders what is Audyssey (other than a strange spelling for some other word) ?

It's an EQ circuit that measures (via a mic) the frequency response of the speakers in a room and makes necessary adjustments for the most accurate sound reproduction. It basically compensates for poor room acoustics, and it also measures the distance of the speakers and sets the appropriate levels.
