While reading this thread: https://www.quadraphonicquad.com/fo...-call-the-10-best-albums-of-the-60-s-amp-70-s I decided it would be a fun thread to list QQ members' Top 10 album from the 60's & 70's, as frogmort had done in his post.

The album must NOT be a greatest hits compilation and must have been released between 1960 and 1979. It should NOT be a historical release, whose recording predates 1960, such as an album of unreleased Django Reinhardt tracks. Reinhardt died in 1953. The Who's Odds & Sods would qualify, since all tracks were recorded AND released between 1960 and 1979.

Most of all, I implore everyone to respect other members and their opinions. Disagreeing respectfully is fine. Comments like "Jane, you ignorant slut!" will be edited out, since personal attacks have no place here.

Optionally, in addition to your top 10 '60-'79, you can also list your favorite albums 11-20 from that era, but PLEEEZE list them separately, or at least signify which are 11-20, still within this thread.

I can safely predict that no two lists will be alike and that everyone else will likely take exception to at least one choice on everyone else's list.

Have fun!

frogmort listed his top 10 in the aformentioned thread. Actually, his list "goes to ELEVEN!" It's one more!:

My (frogmort's) personal "off the cuff" top 10 of the 60's & 70's
(Edit: I guess I'm more into the 70's)

Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage
King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic
Jeff Beck - With the Jan Hammer Group Live
The Beatles - Rubber Soul/Revolver (tie)
James Brown - Live at the Apollo
ELP - Brain Salad Surgery

Great. I love ranking lists :).

Yes, I'm also a 70s guy. :)

Here's my Top 10 list. No doubt Kwad Kitty has his own list with Cat Stevens, Year of the Cat and Cat Mother and the All-Night Newsboys topping the list. My list also denotes any Quad/SACD/DVD-a/DTS CD, etc. releases

1 - Moby Grape (1st album with finger on washboard)
2 - Blood, Sweat & Tears (II) SQ/Q8/5.1 SACD (coming soon)

20- Switched-On Bach (I) Wendy Carlos SQ/Q8

Although my favorites lists can be somewhat fluid, my Top 10 is pretty firm. My Top 20 represents a tenth of one percent of my total collection. I could go on a desert island with these. My all-time favorite song is NOT represented: Beginnings from Chicago Transit Authority SQ/Q8/DVD-v DTS Apologies to those who would choose Zep, Floyd, Stones, Steely Dan, Dead, Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen, etc. I'm complete or near complete on all, but there simply wasn't room. Perhaps Miles is the most glaring omission for me. I have well of over 600 discs of him. Oh, well...

I must say that the early lists are very impressive and right up my musical alley...I wonder who is going to be the first to include some very subjective listings...no wrong answers in something like this...but I'm sure there are some with very eclectic tastes in music...of course Quad Linda offered some real gems...I love Spirit...and Matz79 touched on some AC/DC which I love and it's too bad that Back In Black was released in 1980 because it might have edged into my top 10 list..at least in honorable mention....love that album...

I see Skindzier's post(which I'm going to call Schindler's List in honor of the famous motion picture)and it's going to resemble my top 10 very closely..and his honorable mention are all albums I like...not a bad one in the bunch...then there is IMachine..one of my favorite forum posters...always enjoy his posts...and I see a gem in his top 10..Blue Oyster Cult's first album...I love (Don't)Fear the Reaper from the Agents of Fortune album...one of my all time favorite singles..btw Eric Blood from the Cult will be 70 on Dec 1st...Tusk is another interesting selection and my second favorite album by The Mac...it set a mark for the most expenses for studio time by a band up to it's release date in 1979... a million dollars...the sales weren't that good and the record company viewed it as a failure...but Fleetwood Mac fans would not agree... although Frogmort hasn't actually posted yet on this thread his selections on another thread were very diversified and unique...hope he stops by on this thread and shares some more thoughts...

I love these kind of threads...it's always nice to know what the "other" poster considers as special music...also jogs my memory of songs and albums I had forgotten about and I can revisit..

I'm now going to try and finish this post as I had to stop earlier...I must say it's very hard to trim this list down..I also like Motown music and this period produces some outstanding songs and voices(like Lou Rawls)...this list isn't really by order of preference...somebody had to be first..

Rumours-very emotional songs
Sgt Peppers-could have put several Beatle albums here but DAY IN THE LIFE was the difference maker
Hotel California-the title song is a killer
L.A. Woman-the last "real" Doors album with Love Her Madly-L.A.Woman-The Wasp-and Riders On The Storm
Aja-songs that I heard on the radio and fell in love with...not a bad song in the bunch
Dark Side Of The Moon-influenced my musical taste for a couple of decades
The Stranger-was torn between this album and Piano Man...as Captain Jack was my "get high" anthem song
Houses of The Holy-other Led Zeppelin albums sold more but this one struck a chord with me
Surrealistic Pillow-Jefferson Airplane's white rabbit and somebody to love were as significant as the Beatles Day In The Life
Yellow Brick Road-just loaded with good songs

Wow, some very nice lists indeed. I guess it's not all-together surprising to see so many repeated titles (which I've added to!). It would be cool if someone was willing to comb through all the lists after some time to compile the definitive QQ Top Ten.

I've never kept a running top 10 (or 20) and find it exceedingly difficult to do so as I know it would change depending on the day. But I certainly never tire of my choices below. Some may not be the 'best' LPs in my collection but all have left an indelible mark.

1. The Beatles - Abbey Road
2. Elton John - Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy
3. Stevie Wonder - Fulfillingness’ First Finale
4. The Beatles - Revolver
5. Yes - Close to the Edge
6. Frank Zappa - One Size Fits All
7. Steely Dan - The Royal Scam
8. Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
9. Supertramp - Crime of the Century
10. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

11. The Beatles - Sgt Pepper
12. Elton John - Madman Across the Water
13. Yes - Fragile
14. George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
15. Queen - A Night at the Opera

20a. David Bowie - Station to Station
20b. 10cc - How Dare You
20c. Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink
20d. Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything

I'm going to stop editing my original post now, however as I read these, I realize the Honorable Mentions definitely should have included:
Doors s/t
Doors - LA Woman
Jethro Tull - Aqualung

:)

This thread is killing me....too cool. I'm going to say this...my top 10...might not be my top 10. What they represent are some of my all time favorites that come to mind NOW. I didn't have time to sleep on this, nor much time to ponder. so here goes...

And remember - these are MY favorites...not what I perceive as all time greatest...based on outside influence. Most importantly...these are not in any order.

1. Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
2. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin (1)
3. The Doors - The Doors
4. The Scorpions - In Trance
5. The Beatles - Rubber Soul
6. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
7. AC/DC - Highway to Hell
8. Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
9. Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
10. Fleetwood Mac - Rumors

King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic
King Crimson - Lizard
King Crimson - Red
Yes - Close To The Edge
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Steely Dan - The Royal Scam
Gentle Giant - Octopus
Gong - You
Santana - Caravanserai
Brian Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain

I was just listening to that the other day! Great album. Have you heard his beautifully re-imagined version of "Heaven" (from the end of the "Foreigner Suite") on the 2006 "An Other Cup"?
No I will have to check that out. Thanks for the heads up

Now I'm killing myself...forgot the almighty Floyd. I would probably bump Simon/Garfunkel (reluctantly) and add Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Floyd. jeez....that's what I get for being so spontaneous.

I find this extremely tough, I am more of a 70's person as those were my teen years so will list my top 10 bands from 70's and would be quite happy with these being Island disk's and my list of 11-20 will reflect albums from 60's that are kind of special to me.

1. Queen-A Night at the Opera
2. ELO-Out of the Blue
3. Genesis-Foxtrot
4. Yes-Going for the One
5. Rush-Hemispheres
6. Pink Floyd-Dark side of the Moon
7. Supertramp-Even in the Quietest Moments
8. Cars-Cars
9. Peter Gabriel-1
10. David Bowie-Low

11. Beatles-Sgt Peppers
12. Beach Boys-Pet Sounds
13. Simon and Garfunkel-Sound of Silence
14. Led Zep-2
15. Who-Tommy
16. Love-Forever Changes
17. Zombies-Odessey and Oracle
18. Bee Gees-Odessa
19. Velvet Underground-Velvet Underground
20. King Crimson-In the Court

There are so many great albums I have not listed but I am like Bob Romano this is what I can think of today, tomorrow list probably would change.
Spirit might yet work their way into 60's top 10 as I just recently got a great 5 cd boxset from Spirit and haven't listened enough yet but I understand why QuadLinda has Spirit(12 Dreams of ...) in her top 10, their first 4 albums are very good.
From 70's I could have just as easily put in albums from Heart,Cheap Trick,Fleetwood Mac,Ramones,Aerosmith and on on.
